For works of student writing that are to be submitted for a grade (research papers, theses, dissertations, etc.) I will provide editing support in a way that teaches the student how to improve the document without doing the work for the student. However, I will provide comprehensive grammatical editing services for dissertations and theses written by students whose native language is not English.
In cases where intensive developmental work on a student document is warranted, I may require the student to include the chairperson, advisor, instructor, or teaching assistant in a group email with me before editing begins to ensure the following:
(1) That those who will be grading the student work are aware that the student has had extra support that the student’s classmates may not have received.
(2) That all parties can agree in advance on the appropriate scope of support in compliance with relevant college or university policies.
(3) That the editing process can serve to help the student cultivate their own academic writing skills.
The edits I apply to student writing will help students identify areas for improvement, but I will not carry out corrections or writing for the student. Ultimately, the final work must be produced by the student.
For students: How should I go about asking my instructor or advisor for approval to use this editing service?
For instructors and advisors: Why should I consider allowing my student to use this editing service?
