Revisions

The degree of my involvement in the revision process depends on the writer’s goals and the type of writing. Some clients hire an editor for utilitarian reasons and may prefer to turn the document over to the editor to make corrections as the editor sees fit. This approach may be appropriate for documents such as business marketing materials or technical reports. I charge my standard hourly rate when making such revisions for the client, and I provide the client with both a marked-up and a “clean” version of the edited document.

For scholarly and creative work, it is important that the original author be the one to make the revisions. In this way, the author can go through the marked-up document and choose which edits to accept or reject. (Microsoft Word track changes mode makes this relatively straightforward.) This approach preserves the original author’s voice and style, and can help authors strengthen their writing skills by keeping them actively engaged with their own writing from start to finish.
