Writer and editor will work together to identify the writer’s intended audience and preferred style to ensure audience-appropriate usage throughout the writer’s document. Ultimately, the writer will make the final call on which editing suggestions to accept. Usage is an art, not a science. Moreover, usage is constantly changing as language evolves. Standard English usage of bygone decades—which often adhered to conventions borrowed from Latin and ancient Greek—may be out of fashion with modern authors, and colloquial usage will inevitably alter the meanings of words over time. The editor’s job is to help the author achieve the desired tone throughout the document (e.g., formal or informal, traditional or modern, exclusive or inclusive).
